If you use a computer, you know how easy it is to have a
love-hate relationship with it. Emails,
spam, Google, etc. with the press of a key.
A truly modern miracle and sometimes it even works. I recently had a
really simple question for a techie on my favorite computer checkbook program,
Quicken. I truly love this program. When
I bought a new computer, I also bought the latest version that was not too
different from the one I had been using for ten years. However, I found a
problem. If you are familiar with this program, then you know there is a
command – Find - to locate a specific entry in your checkbook. There is also a command to find all payments
to a specific person or company. It’s called Find All. This is a very helpful command
since you can then see every payment you made to anyone or any company. But
with this new version, I couldn’t find Find All. It was really bothersome.
I know how to navigate through this program and looked
everywhere but no luck. So I called their Customer Service. After the usual
press this, press that, I was connected to a human who informed me that to
speak with a technical support person costs $24.95. Almost $25 to answer a
simple question? I didn’t think so. But she informed me that I could access
their trouble-shooting site for a computer chat with a technical maven at no
cost. That sounded realistic so I plugged into their support site and asked a
simple question. Where is the command Find All? Now I think this is rather
simple English. She (it was a female
techie) responded by trying to tell me how to find Find. Failure!
I re-wrote the same question, informing her I knew how to find Find and
guess what happened? She disconnected me.
Time for The Letter to the President.
The following week, a very nice gentleman called in response
to my polite and simple request. How
answered my question (he explained how to find Find All) at no cost and that
was that. Easy. Intuit, manufacturers of Quicken, are now
elected to the Good Guys Hall of Fame.
